Election of 1824Period 5
Brief (3-4 Sentence) Summary
The election was against four Republicans William Crawford, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and General Andrew Jackson. The two front runners became Adams and Jackson who were total opposites. Adams was a nationalist and a New Englander as well as more reserved, while Jackson was a western war hero and outgoing-he was vague so he wouldn't offend any voters. It was a three way tie so the house had to decide between Adams, Jackson, and Crawford. Clay, the Speaker of the House, endorsed Adams and then Adams won. Then the Jacksonians accused Adams of bribing Clay with the Secretary of State job. This was known as the "corrupt bargain."
